OOOH Wow, my first blog this should be intresting.
I was convinced by a friend to start writing one of these, whether it will be intresting is another matter completely but i will give it a go. Since I am a film fanatic the majority will be film related etc, purely because I just enjoy them so much. Granted there are many more important things in life to moan or rejoce about but hell, if I want to read about that stuff i’ll sit and grumble while reading The Times. And quite frankly I like writing about film.
Critics have often stated that Lethal Weapon is the definitve 80’s Buddy cop movie, but as I write this I am currently watching “Alien Nation” one of the underrated 80’s buddy-cop movies. A thought provoking high concept Sci-Fi thriller which subplot centers around imagration ,granted it is racism against aliens but is still an intresting way of tackling a subject matter particully as the main plot revolves around a super drug. A lot of critics and so on would find this hokey or possibly even too much of a high concept to even take seriously, but it is a highly enjoyable cop thriller with great performances by both James Cann and Mandy Patinkin (as the intrestingly named George “San” Fransisco) they match each other and really work as an odd couple (no homoerotic undertones between these two cop partners) . This is has cult classic filmmaking written all over it just purely because it is so typically 80’s, from its gituar twanging soundtrack to its drug plot line, OTT violence and bickering banter between both partners (the clever scripting and story provided by the creator of Farscape). Yet it still feels ahead of its time and despite the cliches it does contain plenty of orignality as well as great action sequences. It’s a shame that it has been so overlooked , but it did eventually produce a spin off tv series which continued the evolution of the aliens as they lived on earth, and while intresting I always felt it was lacking something but it did proved some more information around George’s family life. So as curiosity value goes (and if liked the film enough but wanted to learn more) the short lived tv series was a good place to continue the characters adventures. Myself , I prefered to stick with this cult classic, and if you have yet to seek it out and enjoy high concept buddy movies with a twist, why not give it a shot you might just enjoy it.
